Mai \u00eenainte, \u00een primii doi ani de carier\u0103 concertistic\u0103 (1899, 1900), c\u00e2ntase pe un Stradivarius cump\u0103rat din Stuttgart, \u00een parte de tat\u0103l s\u0103u, \u00een parte cu bani colecta\u021bi printr\u2011o subscrip\u021bie public\u0103 lansat\u0103 de Ana Haret, so\u021bia ministrului Spiru Haret, la care au contribuit 90.000 de copii (fiecare cu c\u00e2te zece bani) din toate \u0219colile din Rom\u00e2nia. Avea, dup\u0103 cum muzicianul \u00eensu\u0219i a declarat mai t\u00e2rziu \u00eentr\u2011un interviu, ceva dintr\u2011o \u201esopran\u0103 lejer\u0103\u201d; era cumva incompatibil cu n\u0103zuin\u021bele sale, a\u0219a c\u0103 l\u2011a schimbat cu o alt\u0103 vioar\u0103 veche de prestigiu, realizat\u0103 de cel\u0103lalt renumit lutier italian. De data aceasta, descoperise o \u201emezzosopran\u0103 dramatic\u0103\u201d, un \u201eGuarnerius care nu are poate o putere cov\u00e2r\u0219itoare, dar are o ml\u0103diere extraordinar\u0103, cu darul s\u0103 m\u0103 \u00eenc\u0103lzeasc\u0103. Scoate vibra\u021bii care corespund de minune st\u0103rilor mele suflete\u0219ti.\u201d (Rampa, 26 octombrie 1931).<\/p>\n<p>Mai pu\u021bin bine cunoscut (sau limpede formulat) este cum \u0219i acest Guarnerius, de\u0219i Enescu nu a dorit nicidecum s\u0103 renun\u021be la el, a ajuns p\u00e2n\u0103 la urm\u0103, spre triste\u021bea maestrului, s\u0103 stea destul\u0103 vreme pe tu\u0219\u0103. Se pare c\u0103, pe la \u00eenceputul anilor 1920, instrumentul \u00ee\u0219i pierduse din str\u0103lucirea caracteristic\u0103. \u00cen c\u00e2teva interviuri \u0219i interven\u021bii scrise, Romeo Dr\u0103ghici, directorul fondator al Muzeului Na\u021bional George Enescu, a explicat aceast\u0103 deteriorare drept o consecin\u021b\u0103 a expunerii lemnului la umiditate excesiv\u0103, dup\u0103 ce Enescu exersase intens la vioar\u0103 \u00een cursul uneia dintre primele sale c\u0103l\u0103torii transatlantice. Solu\u021bia convenabil\u0103 a ap\u0103rut \u00een 1930, gra\u021bie lutierului alsacian Paul Kaul, care l\u2011a sf\u0103tuit pe Enescu s\u0103\u2011\u0219i lase \u00eendr\u0103gita, dar uzata vioar\u0103 \u201ela odihn\u0103\u201d, oferindu\u2011i, \u00een schimb, dou\u0103 instrumente de fabrica\u021bie proprie, de dimensiuni mai mari dec\u00e2t cele obi\u0219nuite, special croite la solicitarea muzicianului.<\/p>\n<p>Pe de alt\u0103 parte, Sandu Albu \u2013 violonist cu o notabil\u0103 carier\u0103 interna\u021bional\u0103, care a c\u00e2ntat al\u0103turi de Enescu \u2013 a l\u0103sat, \u00een cartea sa de memorii (1972), o relatare diferit\u0103 cu privire la factorii care au determinat \u201eobosirea\u201d Catedralei. M\u0103car ca o curiozitate anecdotic\u0103, merit\u0103 citat\u0103 m\u0103rturia respectiv\u0103: se pare c\u0103 nu impregnarea cu umiditatea aerului oceanic a fost de vin\u0103, ci o oarecare neglijen\u021b\u0103 a lui Enescu \u00eensu\u0219i \u00een manevrarea instrumentului. C\u0103ci, sus\u021bine Sandu Albu, \u201emaestrul nostru avea preocup\u0103ri at\u00e2t de diverse, \u00eenc\u00e2t nu mai g\u0103sea timpul necesar pentru \u0219ters \u0219i lustruit violina. Mai \u00eentrebuin\u021ba \u0219i o sub-b\u0103rbie extrem de mic\u0103, falca dep\u0103\u0219ind\u2011o cu mult, astfel \u00eenc\u00e2t transpira\u021bia excesiv\u0103 \u00een at\u00e2tea seri de concerte uzase, ba chiar putrezise lemnul\u201d. \u00cen aceste condi\u021bii, Enescu a acceptat sugestia lui Sandu Albu de a supune vioara examin\u0103rii lui Emil Herrmann, celebru restaurator new-yorkez de instrumente. Lucrurile s-au petrecut \u00een ianuarie 1933, la \u00eenceputul turneului american \u00eentreprins de Enescu \u00een acel an. Finalul turneului a fost marcat de revenirea lui Enescu la New York, pe 31 martie, c\u00e2nd Sandu Albu a sus\u021binut un recital la Town Hall, \u00een programul c\u0103ruia a figurat \u0219i Sonata a II-a pentru pian \u0219i vioar\u0103, op. 6, prezentat\u0103 cu concursul compozitorului la pian. Dar, \u201e\u00een lipsa maestrului din New York, Herrmann \u00eemi telefonase s\u0103 vin imediat la d\u00e2nsul. \u00abIat\u0103\u00bb, mi\u2011a spus el, \u00abce am g\u0103sit \u00een vioara maestrului Enescu\u00bb. M\u2011a cuprins groaza c\u00e2nd am v\u0103zut. Era ca o cenu\u0219\u0103 groas\u0103, praful de colofoniu de culoare cenu\u0219ie; s\u0103-l sco\u021bi cu linguri\u021ba, nu altceva! Cum era s\u0103 mai vibreze biata vioar\u0103? [&#8230;] C\u00e2nd a fost gata pus\u0103 la punct am \u00eencercat\u2011o, \u00eenainte s\u2011o vad\u0103 maestrul. Era ca un clopot, r\u0103sun\u0103toare, vie \u0219i generoas\u0103, incomparabil\u0103 calitativ cu noul Paul Kaul pe care \u00eel c\u00e2nta cu at\u00e2ta convingere maestrul, de at\u00e2\u021bia ani \u00eencoace. C\u00e2nd \u0219i-a v\u0103zut vioara, nu-i venea s\u0103 cread\u0103. Era de fa\u021b\u0103 \u0219i Mischa Elman \u2013 un fin cunosc\u0103tor \u00een aceast\u0103 materie. El i-a spus foarte sincer maestrului Enescu: \u00abNoi cu to\u021bii te admir\u0103m \u0219i te iubim. Permite\u2011mi s\u0103\u2011\u021bi dau un sfat: c\u00e2nt\u0103 pe Guarnerius-ul dumitale at\u00e2t de frumos, las\u0103 vioara aceea nou\u0103, Paul Kaul, care nu este de tine!\u00bb. Maestrul a promis, dar tot pe Kaul a continuat s\u0103 c\u00e2nte.
