Born in 1994 in Kazan, Vasily Stepanov graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (in classes of Professors Natalia Shakhovskaya and Boris Andrianov) and its assistant internship (in class of Boris Andrianov). He studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid (in class of Professor Jens Peter Maintz).
Winner of the Mravinsky International Competition for Youth (2012) and the Riga Classic Strings International Cello and Violin Competition (2018), he has performed solo concerts in France, Spain, Denmark, Japan, and the USA. He has worked with conductors such as Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Alexander Titov, Dimitris Botinis, Alexander Sladkovsky, and others. He participated in the music recordings for the films Sobibor, Brotherhood, Once Upon a Time in the Desert.
He leads a cello class at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music and the Moscow Gnessin Special School of Music.
